Utilities Provider builds change management Strategy

The Situation

The client was a utilities provider seeking to build their change management capability and required support in developing their Change Management Strategy and Internal Change Management capability.

They had a very experienced change manager, some contract change resources working on projects and a group of new change managers they wanted to guide and support as they built their hands-on change management experience. Also on the list was a desire to take a consistent approach to change management across all programs of work and capture more of the available people dependant benefits.

Action

They had already captured their current level of Change Maturity and decided on their goal to move toward. Their first goal was to develop a Change Management Strategy to guide activities on their change projects.

We worked with the key stakeholders to develop their Change Management Strategy using their preferred change management framework. Once this was developed and agreed, we moved into developing a range of resources for internal use by all change resources.

This included:

  • A clearly articulated Change Management Strategy document to guide change management activities and measure their progress.
  • The development of a Change Management Implementation Guide that stepped the change managers through the tools being used. This included templates and guides on designing their plans and developing the activities required to manage the people side of their change projects and take stock of progress over time.
  • The design of presentation templates to be used by the change managers to educate and align project teams, sponsors, managers, and other stakeholders in understanding what change management was and the role they played in delivering successful outcomes.
  • Training material to ensure the Change managers could refresh their knowledge and be well equipped to deliver the above presentations including audio visual examples.
  • Ongoing coaching and advice to support the development of change management capability.

Results/Outcomes

The organisation uses the above resources to continue to build the capability of their change managers, and we continue to provide coaching and guidance.

They are committed to a path of building greater organisational agility and capacity for change, understanding it is a multiyear project in and of itself.
