Is the key to a more fulfilling and successful 2025 adding more to your plate? More education, activities, responsibilities, projects, and social media posts? You probably have your own growing list.
Over the past few months, I’ve deliberately included activities that bring joy to my life. From live music and theatre to exploring painting with water colours (though learning new things can be quite uncomfortable—but that’s another story).
I recently attended two live gigs at a local venue. The loud, immersive music experience allowed me to be fully present, momentarily swept away. Being on the dance floor, lost in the rhythm, is much like how I feel when leading workshops or delivering keynote speeches—totally in my element! It’s my favourite feeling!
These experiences, coupled with client conversations as the new year begins, have made me ponder why we always think MORE is the answer.
As we add MORE, do we question why we’re doing it? What value do these new additions bring? Are we strategically managing what’s already on our agenda? Will it achieve our intended goals?
I’ve noticed both individuals and organisations piling more onto their already packed schedules, stretching themselves and their teams further. But are they being intentional? Will these extra activities help achieve their strategic objectives? Shouldn’t they consider removing some tasks to focus on what truly matters?
What if we took a step back from the hustle? I understand the appeal of being in the midst of the action, or feeling indispensable to the daily grind. But the dance floor is hot, crowded, and noisy—hardly the place to see the bigger picture.
Maybe it’s time to step off the dance floor, out of the day-to-day chaos, and find clarity. Focus on your guiding star and the priorities that will lead you there, and muster the courage to leave behind what doesn’t serve that purpose.
